W2TM      W2TM Tips-1

Although we are not currently running a Write to the Max there is no reason you cannot use this tool to help jump-start your writing.

Before W2TM, get prepared for your week of writing so you can devote the maximum amount of time to your goal:

  1. Set a goal that makes you stretch a little further than you think you can.

  2. Make meals ahead of time or buy a lot of frozen pizza. Try crock-pot cooking or other means of making short work of dinner. Consider spending your lunch hour writing instead of chatting with co-workers or eating out.

  3. Clear your calendar of as many appointments, chores and obligations as you can.

  4. Get the housekeeping done ahead of time and warn the family that you will be less available.

  5. Plan your days to allow for extra writing time.

  6. Break your goal down into daily goals, too, so you can chart your daily progress.

  7. Set up a reward system for yourself. Buy a new book and keep it handy as a reading treat when you reach your goal.

  8. Have your story somewhat planned, so you aren't staring at a blank screen the first day.

  9. Go no mail or digest on high-volume e-mail lists.

  10.  Get in the right mental frame. Don't think about the "can'ts." Try to focus on the fact that you can do this. It's one week - that's seven days of trying your hardest.

During W2TM:

  1. Remember to just write. This is a time for writing as much as possible during a seven-day period. Don't try to edit or revise too much. Just let the words flow.

  2. Take chances. If the book wants to go in direction A, give it a try. Sometimes, you'll find your best writing where you least expect it.

  3. Write EVERYWHERE. In the car, at the doctor's office. Don't confine your writing to your computer or office.

  4. If you get stuck, skip ahead. Write another scene or write the scene from a different point of view.

  5. Ignore the house. Yes, by day five, things might be getting pretty hairy. Remember there is always next week to catch up on the housework. This is YOUR week to write. Take advantage of it.

  6. Cheer every time you reach a goal.

  7. If you fall short, don't let that stop you. Keep chugging along and remember this W2TM is for you - no one else. Whatever writing you accomplish is MORE THAN YOU HAD LAST WEEK. That is an achievement in itself.

  8. When the week is over, look back over what you have done and applaud yourself. Then make plans to write the rest!
