WOMEN’S FICTIN WRITERS ASSOCIATION
The Women’s Fiction Writers Association celebrates two awards contests: the STAR Award for Published Women’s Fiction and the Rising Star Award for Unpublished Women’s Fiction. Both award contests are open to WFWA members and non-members and are specifically for works of Women’s Fiction. What Is Women’s Fiction? Women’s fiction includes layered stories in which the plot is driven by the main character’s emotional journey. The novels can be contemporary or historical and have magical, mystery, thriller, romance, or other elements.
The STAR Award is designed exclusively for the published women’s fiction author. NEW FOR 2024: The STAR Award just grew brighter. In addition to the traditional STAR Award trophy and recognition by WFWA, the winner of each category will receive a $500 prize. The STAR Award has two categories. A general category for all full-length published women’s fiction, regardless of time period of the premise or additional plot element.* The second category is ‘Outstanding Debut.’ To be eligible, the entry must be women’s fiction and the author’s first ever published work in any genre. Feb 1, 2024 – Feb 29. 2024
https://www.womensfictionwriters.org/STAR_Award
The Rising STAR Award is designed exclusively for the unpublished, unagented writer of women’s fiction. It offers the chance for priceless feedback from four industry professionals, plus the opportunity to break out of the slush pile and land on the desk of five final round judges, all acquiring agents of women’s fiction. Entry opens: May 5th, 2024 at 12:00pm ET for WFWA members. Once 60 members enter, the contest will move to a lottery system to fill the remaining 40 entries. After 60 entries have been accepted, the waitlist will remain open to members until May 5th, 2024 at 6:00 pm ET. The remaining entries will be filled via random lottery from that waitlist. Entries selected via lottery will have until May 6th at 6:00 pm ET to pay the registration fee and upload their entry.https://www.womensfictionwriters.org/wfwa-awards-home

GLOBE SOUP
2024 HISTORICAL FICTION SHORT STORY CHALLENGE – PRIZE: £1,000 DEADLINE: 23:59 (UK time) 16th Sept, 2024
Story Length: any length up to 4,000 words. For this short story challenge, all participants will be randomly assigned one of 6 periods in history. As soon as you receive your assignment, you’ll have until the closing time to research, write, and submit a short story of no more than 4,000 words, set during this historical period. All we ask is that your story (or a significant portion of your story) be set in your assigned historical period. How much the actual history of that time influences the plot is up to you. You can use real historical figures as characters, you can use completely fictional characters, or you can use a combination of both. Your story can be centred around an actual historical event, have a historical event as the backdrop, or you can simply set your story during your assigned period. Want to mix genres? That’s fine too! You can write a historical horror story, a historical romance, a historical drama, or any kind of historical fiction story you want! The possibilities are endless.
